Bruxism is an excursion and lateral movement(grinding) of teeth which usually happens at nights. People are usually unaware of their grinding. This para functional activity applies lateral damaging forces to the teeth and the jaw bone which make the jaw muscles tight or painful, produce wear faucets on the affcted teeth surface, cause jaw bone to become thicker by growing extra bone (to be able to cope with the extra force which is generated by the grinding) and pain in the face .
A custom made Occlusal guard (bite guard) is the recommended treatment for Bruxism. An Occlusal Guard is made of hard acrylic material in the lab and is fitted, adjusted and balanced( for the lateral forces) by the dentist.
A mouth Guard is made of soft plastic and is highly recommend to be worn by children or adults who are involved in different sports.
A mouth guard is NOT as same as an Occlusal Guard and can not protect the teeth and jaw from the grinding forces.
