Is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental issues, like tooth cavity, gingivitis,
bad breath and periodontal diseases which is a
condition that the gum and bone around the teeth are involved.
Based on an old say "your general health starts from your oral health"
Poor oral hygiene result in gum disease which can be advanced to the surrounding bone and turn to Periodontal disease. The symptoms of gum and bone disease are: redness, swelling, bad breath, loose teeth and sometimes infection. Virgin teeth can be lost solely due to advanced gum and bone disease.
Research has shown that there is direct relationship between gum disease and your general health. Especially in some people with cardiovascular and diabetic disease. This relationship is due to the fact that without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can cause inflammations, decay and infections in your mouth. Also in certain diseases, like HIV or diabetes that body's resistance to infection is lower than a healthy person, poor oral health makes any problems more severe. This problem may happen in pregnant women during their pregnancy due to the hormonal imbalances too. That is why Dr. Hakim recommends three times cleaning instead of two times per year during the pregnancy and nursing in some pregnant women.
Brushing your teeth 2-3 times per day, rinsing and flossing are recommended by all dentists to remove the dental plaque that causes gum disease and tooth decay and have a healthy oral cavity. Our hygienist would be glad to answer all of your questions during your dental cleaning appointment regarding your oral hygiene or if you need instructions about how to brush and floss properly.
